This dry Riesling is full of ripe yellow fruit flavours and a distinct minerality. The vines thrive on steep, south-facing slopes enriched with volcanic rock, giving grapes of exceptional character.
A dry Riesling from Weingut Jakob Schneider in Germany’s Nahe region. Melaphyr takes its name from the dark volcanic rock found in the vineyards, particularly around the Felsensteyer and Rosenberg sites. The grapes benefit from steep, south-facing slopes, where the soils warm quickly and help achieve good ripeness. There’s plenty of ripe yellow fruit here, balanced by lively acidity and a distinctive stony, slightly smoky character. A generous Riesling, but still crisp and refreshing.
Yellow apple, peach, grapefruit, exotic fruit, wild flowers, ginger, smoky minerality
Contains sulphites.
Melaphyr is the name of a volcanic rock found in parts of the Nahe, and it gives this wine its name. The vines grow on steep, south-facing slopes, where the dark stone absorbs heat and helps the grapes ripen. Jakob Schneider is based in Niederhausen and has been making wine in the Nahe for generations. The estate has built a strong reputation for Riesling, with wines ranging from accessible dry styles such as this to some highly regarded single-vineyard bottlings.
