A classed growth claret, the Cantemerle is promise fulfilled. This is a Platonic ideal of Bordeaux, full of cassis, violets, tobacco and cedar shavings, and just entering the finesse of its maturity. Wonderful.
Château Cantemerle is a historic Fifth Growth estate from the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, located in the commune of Macau at the southern end of the Haut-Médoc. The wine is typically a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Aged in French oak barrels, it reflects the château’s commitment to careful winemaking and balanced structure.
Deep ruby in colour with aromas of cassis, dark cherry, and cedar, lifted by touches of menthol and tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied, offering layers of ripe black fruits, graphite, and a hint of spice. Well-structured tannins support a refined, persistent finish.
Contains sulphites.
Château Cantemerle is unusual among the 1855 Grand Cru Classé estates for being included after the original list was published—added later that year following a formal appeal. This makes it the only estate ever to be retroactively classified. Today, it continues to punch above its weight, producing classically styled, age-worthy wines that are among the most accessibly priced of the classified growths. Château Cantemerle Haut-Médoc 2016
